populous performance june 1

Page history last edited by ana isabel 1 yr ago
this started as an event called 'the populous project'

as described by its curators, 'populous' is "the controlled management of nine separate but simultaneous performances." given a parcel of space delineated by lines on the floor, nine artists are given unlimited use of light, sound, movement, and choice within their own parcels. the audience has its parcel in the center of the gym.

in one of these parcels:
on june 1, 2007, as part of Movement Research's spring 2007 festival, ten performers, a choreographer, a group of non-dancers and 160 audience members participated in an event at the Judson Memorial Church entitled 'Populous.' in a single evening, two hour-long performance installations became the culmination of a prolonged dialogue: to create our installation, we spent a month sending a series of emails and written instructions back and forth to each other: we did not rehearse together in a studio, we did not talk to each other, we did not meet or work as a united group prior to the performance. instead, working with the belief that freedom of choice in space is the fabric of live performance, we continually referenced a set of practical instructions guiding and uniting our individual, autonomous efforts.
