what is the zine?

‘the zine’ (lower caps) is a free publication featuring writing by and for the New York City-based performance community. we currently have three issues in print and feature work by over fifty artists.

the zine is a non-commercial, grassroots publication accessible to all, connecting artists in an informal, yet meaningful, way with the public. The zine covers all expenses; individuals do not pay to contribute.

the zine is founded on principles of inclusiveness: contributions are not subjected to any editorial process and the zine accepts submissions on an open, rolling basis. to promote dialogue, contact information for each author is included at the bottom of each entry, and writers must therefore take responsibility for their choices. readers are encouraged to contact writers directly with feedback.

to emphasize the importance of local craft, the zine is not reproduced online. instead, it is a printed artifact with a low budget and a Do-It-Yourself aesthetic. ana and the contributors construct the zines, making each one a work of art in-it-of-itself—something to hold and share with anyone.

the zine has a monthly show on washington heights free radio (www.whfr.org). each show features the work and ideas of a different zine contributor.
